Passivation is the treatment of the surface of stainless steels, with acid solutions to remove contaminants and promote the formation of the passive film on a freshly created surface.
Common passivation treatments include nitric acid (HN03) solutions which will clean the steel surface of free iron contaminants.
Passivation will also aid in the rapid development of the passive oxide film on the steels surface. Passivation does not usually result in a marked change in appearance of the steel surface.
Passivating stainless steel components and parts give many benifits including
